The removable brace: what it is good for and what it is not
It only works while it is in the mouth – and that is exactly where it often fails.

A removable brace consists of a plastic plate with wires that rest against the teeth, and usually a screw. It is taken out for eating and toothbrushing – and has no effect during that time.
What it does well
Widening the jaw, holding space, tipping individual teeth and stabilizing a result once it has been achieved. During growth it can do more: so-called functional orthodontic appliances guide the position of the lower jaw by leading it into a new position that growth then follows.
Where its limit lies
It cannot move a tooth bodily or rotate it around its axis. It tips crowns but does not move roots. Where that is necessary, the path leads to the fixed brace.
The wearing time decides
14 to 16 hours a day are usual, often at night plus a few hours. If that is not reached, simply too little happens – and the treatment drags on without making progress. Some appliances carry a sensor that records the wearing time. That is not surveillance; it prevents months of searching in the wrong place.
The essentials at a glance
- The removable brace only works while it is being worn – 14 to 16 hours a day are usual.
- It can widen the jaw, hold space, tip teeth and stabilize results.
- It cannot move teeth bodily or rotate them. That requires a fixed brace.
- During growth, functional orthodontic appliances guide the position of the lower jaw – this is no longer possible later.

Frequently asked questions
As a rule 14 to 16 hours. The practice will tell you exactly what applies – and success depends on it. A brace that is only worn at night, although 16 hours would be needed, prolongs the treatment without moving it forward.
Raise it at the practice instead of fighting it out at home. If the wearing time is persistently not achieved, a fixed brace is the more honest solution – it works without cooperation. That is not a failure, but an adjustment to reality.
Daily with a brush and cool water, without toothpaste – it roughens the plastic. Cleaning tablets occasionally, not daily. Never place it in hot water, the plastic warps.
Report it to the practice immediately. A new one has to be made, and in the meantime the teeth move back. The longer the gap, the more of what has been achieved is lost.
